Traveling can be unpredictable. You can map out every single detail, make itineraries, but sometimes it doesn’t always go as planned. The best you can do is have a positive mind and just go with the flow, which is exactly what we had to do for our quick trip to Seattle.
David and I had planned a weekend trip to Washington to watch USC play at Husky Stadium. We would be spending a majority of Saturday at the game and had an early 6:00am flight back to California on Sunday. Because of this, we weren’t going to have a lot of time to explore, so Friday night and Saturday morning was our best bet to do any real perusing around Seattle.
Our flight was set to take off at 5:20pm on Friday, leaving us with enough time to enjoy the night in the city. Unfortunately, Long Beach Airport had other plans, and our flight was delayed for over 4 hours. We didn’t get to our hotel until about 2:00am, so there went our first night. And because we went to bed so late, waking up at 5:00am to go to Pike Place Market before the game just wasn’t going to happen.
So, we slept in until the last possible moment (which was only until 6:30am) to get ready for game day and headed to Ivar’s Salmon House to enjoy some sailgating (pictures of that on my Instagram here). I wish I could say we celebrated a victory that afternoon, but it was a tough loss. After the game, we planned to explore the market since we had skipped it earlier that morning. We didn’t realize the time, and by the time we got there, everything was already closing up. We caught the tail end of the fish stalls loading up their inventory and some flowers were still out for purchase, but we did not catch it in its full glory.
Since the market was pretty much closed down, we decided to head to another part of town to check out Elliot Bay Brewery & Pub for drinks and dinner. Our night ended shortly after since we had such an early morning flight back home. And let me tell you, that 3:45am alarm came very early.

We knew it was going to be a short weekend trip when we planned it, but things happened beyond our control and really cut into our time to explore. Pike Place Market was the one thing I had on my list for this quick visit, so I’ll admit it was a little disappointing that we didn’t get to fully experience it. Although it may not have been ideal to spend such a short amount of time in a new city, I had to remind myself we are lucky at all to be able to travel like we do, both internationally and locally here in the US.
Even if this wasn’t the trip we were planning or expecting and we were quite literally sleepless in Seattle, we looked on the bright side and made the most of our little time there. This was still a fun trip to a city we had never been before, and we cannot wait to be back to explore it more!
