Apple of My Eye

Last year, David and I made our way to Oak Glen for some apple picking, and had the best day. We got out of our Huntington Beach bubble, enjoyed the changing of the leaves, and partook in a new activity. It was something so fun and different; therefore, we decided that this would be our new tradition! So when fall rolled around this year, we knew that meant apple picking, and we were thrilled to be going back!

We started the morning off at Snow-Line Orchard, which has been in operation since 1898. I wanted to stop here because they are famous for their mini cider donuts. How could I pass them up? They are made fresh daily with their pressed apple cider and house blended cinnamon sugar. And yes, they are just as delicious as they sound! Snow-Line Orchard happens to also be a winery. While we were here, we made sure to make our way to “The Backroom” to try the apple sparks (cider and champagne). It’s the perfect fall mimosa! We sat a picnic table and enjoyed our treats before moving on to the main event- apple picking!

Up the road from Snow-line Orchard is Riley’s at Los Rios Ranchos. We came here last year and were happy with our pickings, so we made sure to come back. There are two different types of apples available for U-pick at Riley’s: the Arkansas Black and Granny Smith. We, of course, picked both.

The Arkansas Black, also known as the Snow White apple, is the more rare apple and has a distinctive flavor (nutty and vanilla-like). I’ve never seen these in any grocery store, so we couldn’t pass them up at Riley’s. I love going from tree to tree together, looking for the best to harvest; Apple picking really is such a fun way to spend quality time together.

After filling our bag with Arkansas Black apples, we made our way across the street to the Granny Smith orchard. This orchard is usually less crowded than the other one, which I prefer; It feels like you have it all to yourselves. Because I’m making an apple crisp for Thanksgiving, we had to pick a hefty amount. We accomplished our goal as our bag was overflowing and was so heavy.

We always have a good time together, but there is something about getting away for the day and doing something special that just kicks it up a notch. Keeping up with (new) traditions together and making lasting memories has become so important to me. Apple picking at Oak Glen is definitely something we will make sure we continue to do throughout the years; I honestly cannot wait to bring our family here as it grows.

It’s special days or moments like this that always makes me reflective. I live a very blessed life. Although I try to always stay grateful, this time of year has a way of reminding you to be thankful for all the good in your life. This isn’t everything, but just a few things I have enormous gratitude for:

LOVE
I have the most loving and supportive husband.
He’s my rock and best friend, and I couldn’t imagine doing life without him.

FAMILY
I have a caring family who will drop everything at a moments notice if needed.
Family is so important, and I appreciate them more than I say.

HEALTH
There were a few health scares in both our families this year.
I’m just so happy everyone is healthy and safe now.

FRIENDSHIP
My friends are the best. I’m so lucky.

TRAVEL
We traveled internationally twice this past year with a few local US trips sprinkled here and there.
We are very fortunate.

Whatever you are grateful for, remember to take time to give thanks. Hope you all have a great and memorable Thanksgiving surrounded by love and happiness.

xo,
Ashley
